Fire fighters were able to save a family’s Wellsville home after a nearby garage was destroyed in a fire. The blaze was reported Friday afternoon at 3281 West 5400 South.
Wellsville City Fire Chief Jerald Leishman said the fire started in the detached garage. The building was fully engulfed in flames when fire fighters arrived on the scene.
“When it is fully involved like that, the shop is obviously a loss,” said Leishman. “So, our priority when we got there was to protect the house. Our guys started pushing flames back and then Logan’s ladder truck got above the roof of the house, pushed the fire away from the home, and knocked the flames down.”
There was no one inside the garage at the time of the fire and the occupants inside the home were all able to evacuate safely.
The brick home sustained only minor damage. The garage however was a complete loss. It was storing a car and boat that were also destroyed.
Leishman said the fire is believed to be accidental. The homeowner told firefighters, he was working in the garage and had gone inside the home just before the fire was reported.
“There was a four-wheeler that wouldn’t start and [the homeowner] had a heater on it. Something got hot and burnt.”
Fire fighters from Wellsville, Mendon and other members of the Cache County Fire District responded to the blaze.
