Logan City updates progress on Third Dam construction project

Mark Montgomery, Logan Light & Power director talks to For the People host Jason Williams

Logan City is currently working to revitalize part of the hydroelectric project, which the city owns and operates, by upgrading and replacing aspects of 3rd Dam in Logan Canyon. This will include repairs and replacements to the surge tank, sluice gate, spillway, and gatehouse among other necessary improvements.

On KVNU’s monthly Speak to the Mayor program on Wednesday, joining Logan Mayor Holly Daines was Light & Power director Mark Montgomery. He was asked if there would be many aesthetic changes in how the historic structure looks when the project is completed.

“We’re hoping not. Part of our requirements, due to historical preservation and the Forest Service keeping the aesthetics and the looks of the canyon is to not change it too drastically. The gatehouse, which is kind of the little shack you can see that’s right next to the road as you go up, that will be torn down and rebuilt. But it will look largely the same from the outside, we have to maintain historical colors,” he explained.

Montgomery said many agencies have a stake  in the project.  The Forest Service owns all the ground underneath, Utah Department of Transportation runs right up to the project with the highway, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission is the federal agency that oversees all hydro-electric power and dams. Also, Utah State Dam Safety is involved.
