LOGAN, Utah – Sophomore outside hitter Gabbi Shumway and freshman outside hitter Whitney Solosabal combined for 32 kills, but Boise State had four players post double-digit kills in leading the Broncos to a hard-fought five-set (25-13, 23-25, 26-24, 20-25, 15-11) Mountain West win on Tuesday night on Kirby Court inside the Wayne Estes Center.
Boise State improves to 12-8 on the season and 4-5 in Mountain West play with the win, while Utah State falls to 3-17 overall and 1-8 in league play.
Boise State hit .273 (69-25-161) in the match as compared to a .199 (55-25-151) hitting percentage for Utah State. The Broncos also had two more team blocks (10-8), two more service aces (9-7) and 12 more digs (63-51) in the match, while USU had four fewer service errors (9-5).
Solosabal posted a career-high 16 kills and hit a season-best .343 (16-4-35) for Utah State, while Shumway also had 16 kills and hit .158 (16-7-57). Libero Tasia Taylor led a trio of Aggies with double-digit digs as the senior finished the match with 17. Senior setter Kassidy Johnson added a double-double for the home team with 49 assists and 10 digs, while redshirt junior outside hitter Ally Packard finished the match with 10 digs.
Boise State was led by senior outside hitter Sabryn Roberts with 17 kills and 13 digs, while freshman middle blocker Jessica Donahue had 16 kills and seven blocks.
Boise State used an early 7-2 run to take control of the first set and coasted to the 12-point win. BSU hit .457 (18-2-35) in the opening set as compared to a .103 (7-4-29) hitting percentage for USU.
Shumway led Utah State with five kills in the second set as the Aggies scored five of the final eight points to even the match. USU hit .250 (16-7-36) in the set and BSU hit .216 (14-6-37).
Utah State was on the verge of winning back-to-back sets as it held a 24-22 advantage in the third frame, but Boise State scored four-straight points for the win. The Broncos hit .368 (20-6-38) and the Aggies hit .344 (15-4-32) during the frame.
Utah State fought back, however, to win the fourth set by scoring six of the final seven points in posting the five-point win. Solosabal led the way for USU with seven kills as the Aggies hit .212 (12-5-33) in the fourth set as compared to a .088 (10-7-34) hitting percentage for the Broncos.
In the fifth set, Boise State scored the first two points and raced out to a 10-4 advantage before Utah State fought back with five-straight points to get within 10-9. However, the Broncos answered the Aggies’ run with three-straight points of their own and never looked back. BSU hit .176 (7-4-17) in the deciding set, while USU hit .000 (5-5-21).
