Miscues doom Green Canyon, Sky View stays undefeated

The Sky View Bobcats are the class of Region 12 and came in to North Logan Friday night with an undefeated 7-0 record. Green Canyon had won two games in a row for the first time in school history and has a chance to get in to the playoffs. The Wolf Pack isn’t foreign to big upsets having knocked off Pine View on the road to start the season.

Green Canyon wasn’t over matched but their own mistakes doomed them against a team they couldn’t afford to give extra help to. Sky View burned five minutes of the opening quarter on their way down to a Mason Falslev sneak to go up 7-0. Then recovered a fumble on the following Green Canyon drive when a blitz blindsided Joe Dygert near midfield. Another meticulous drive ended with a Jon Hansen touchdown catch.

It looked like it was going to be all Sky View when the defense forced a three and out and drove past midfield but got stopped on fourth and two. Green Canyon QB Joe Dygert was able to avoid a sack and stay in bounds to deliver a strike to McKay Yorgason who ran from one side of the field to the other to cut it to 14-7. But Falselv wouldn’t be out done by his counter part and was able to run back and forth 15 yards behind the line of scrimmage to avoid multiple defenders before delivering what ended up being a 31 yard scoring strike. The next drive, Dygert overthrew Jake Lundin and it was intercepted by Scout Morris for the Bobcats’ defense. Falslev kept it on fourth and five deep in Green Canyon territory to get the first down and the next play running back Tanner Stokes took it in for the 28-7 lead.

Mason Falslev accounted for 90 rushing yards and 127 passing yards on 8-13 attempts at half, while Stokes had 117 yards on the ground. Green Canyon QB Joe Dygert didn’t play the last in the half and was seen trying to loosen up his shoulder on the sideline, having missed time already this season with a shoulder injury, and had fans worried he might be out for the game.

Down 28-7 and with a banged up QB it looked like Sky View was in full control of the game when they kicked off to start the third quarter. With no real passing game for much of the night Green Canyon faced a third and nine near midfield. Dygert delivered a deep ball that Kasen Holbrook caught for 29 yards; and, running back Brett Gasaway caught a 17 yard touchdown pass to make it a 28-14 ball game. Then the Wolf Pack defense forced a three and out and got their offense the ball back at the 36. The second play of the drive the hike went through Dygert’s hands and became a second and twenty-seven they couldn’t recover from.

Despite the dangerous Falslev and Stokes getting the ball back for their dangerous offense, the Wolf Pack forced another punt. But on the punt the ball hit a Green Canyon blocker that Sky View recovered at the 18 and Falslev turned it into a 35-14 lead with 97 seconds left in the third quarter. That score seemed like it would put the game away with just a quarter left.

On Sky View’s next possession they had a screen pass go for six but a holding penalty brought it back. Then on third and sixteen Green Canyon got flagged for roughing the passer with 6:45 left in the game and that looked like the end. But the only mistake Mason Flaslev made was throwing an interception to Carter White that he took to the Sky View 44 and then a personal foul moved it to the 26. Yorgason caught a 21 yard touchdown pass to cut it to 35-21 with 4:45 left.

The Bobcats looked to put it out of reach when they lined up for a field goal with 3:06 left, but Cole Wright got in front of it and Green Canyon even drawing a holding penalty for more yards. The Wolf Pack went for a fourth and short near midfield to try and make a game of it but Gasaway fell short with less than three minutes left. Tanner Stokes then broke the goal line twenty-five seconds later to put it out of reach at 42-21…or so it seemed.

In the hurry up offense Green Canyon drove down and Kap O’Reily scored on a 30 yard screen pass with just over thirty seconds left to make it 42-28. Then Ethan Deslisle tapped the football on the kickoff with an onside kick and recovered for Green Canyon. Yorgason caught a 39 yard pass to set up the Wolf Pack inside the ten and it ended up being fourth and goal for the one with six seconds left. On the next play Dygert botched the snap but O’Reily recovered it. The play started with six seconds left, but despite a timeout the clock expired before the coach could stop the clock and 42-34 was the final score.

Both quaterbacks threw an interception but it was the difference in fourth down, the fumble and the punt miscue that kept Green Canyon behind all night. Sky View out gained the Wolf Pack 514 yards to 372, and Falslev had 306 yards himself (13-24 for 166 passing and 140 rushing). Joe Dygert was 15-31 for 245 yards. Tanner Stokes rushed 15 times for 122 yards for Sky View and Green Canyon running back Brett Gasaway ran 21 times 103 yards.

Up next for Green Canyon (2-2) is at Mountain Crest (1-3).

Up next for Sky View (4-0) is at Ridgeline (1-3).
