Fire fighters surround wildfire in Scare Canyon

Smoke rising from the Saw Mill Fire in Scare Canyon, Monday August 27.

Firefighters have surrounded a small wildfire that burned a shed and threatened several cabins east of Avon. The Saw Mill Fire started Monday morning and has burned approximately two acres in Scare Canyon.

Cache County Fire Marshal Jason Winn said the fire was human caused but started accidentally. It was first reported by the property owners, who called 911.

“When [firefighters] arrived on scene the fire was in some heavy timber and the winds were blowing so we did have a few spot fires,” explained Winn.

The fire was approximately one-acre and doubled in size through the day. There were also several cabins in the vicinity that firefighters kept flames away from.

Five brush trucks and a hand crew were able to surround the fire during the afternoon. They were assisted by a helicopter that made several water drops on hot-spots.

Winn said firefighters were helped by cooler temperatures and light rain that had fallen earlier in the day.

“We were pretty lucky that it happened yesterday because if it was a week ago, or even a few days ago, it could have been a different story.”

Fire fighters feel like they have the fire out and contained but will continue to monitor the area for several days, looking for flare ups.
