Logan Mayor discusses road projects and river improvements

Some road projects are wrapping up in Logan City, including the roundabout construction at 600 East and 500 North, a project that began right after Utah State University Commencement. According to Logan Mayor Holly Daines, it is scheduled to be open Thursday.

“A little bit ahead of schedule,” the mayor said. “We kind of promised to have it open before USU starts on the 27th so that is looking good. USU is actually in charge of the landscaping for that.

“They said ‘this is our gateway, let us do this,’ and they’ve got some big plans to put some block A’s in and some additional landscaping. That’s not ready this year; I think they’ll do that next year.”

Daines was a guest on KVNU’s monthly Speak to the Mayor hour during For the People on Wednesday. Earlier this week, Frank Howe, of the Logan River Task Force, was a guest and praised the city for their support of the water projects. One idea he tossed out was a Canoe Trail through the Logan City area of the river.

“Ogden has kind of a kayak section to their river that goes through downtown,” he explained. “Logan City owns some pieces of parks where we’ve worked with this river restoration task force to restore some areas. They’ve been great because we have all these professionals with expertise in these areas and have really just donated their time as volunteers to help guide these projects, help us get grants.”

The mayor said there is a river area at Stewart Nature Park and also at Rendezvous Park where they have done a tremendous amount of river restoration, including creating two new pools for recreation. She said the problem with the idea is that it’s all private property in between. But it is something they have looked at and will continue to investigate.
