LOGAN — A 40-year-old truck driver sustained minor injuries after the semi he was driving rolled, spilling its load of grain. The crash occurred Monday afternoon near 1400 North 1000 West.

Logan City Police Chief Gary Jensen said it appears the grain truck wasn’t able to stop for the red light, as it approached the intersection from the south.

“You know, any vehicle that’s carrying a load, even private vehicles or pulling a heavy trailer or something like that, it’s a different driving mentality,” explained Jensen. “You have to plan ahead. You can’t always stop as quickly as the typical motor vehicle can.

“In this particular case, the light turned red. A motorist stopped for the red light in a rapid fashion and the truck hauling 30,000 lbs of barley just doesn’t have ability to shut it down that quick.”

The truck tried to make a right turn but was travelling to fast and rolled.

The driver told officers he was transporting the grain from his family’s farm to IFA. He sustained injuries to his arm and forehead, and was taken to the hospital to be checked out.

Jensen said despite the damage to the truck and the mess on the road, the driver made a good choice, possibly preventing others from being injured.

“The driver made a decision, not to hit the car in front of him and make the 90-degree turn but had just a little too much speed in that turn, overturning the vehicle. Quite honestly, I think the decision made was a great decision so as not to hurt another party.”

Portions of the road were closed for several hours while crews cleaned up the grain.
