Bear River and Ridgeline cheer teams score well at state competition

Cheerleaders from throughout Utah gathered at Salt Lake Community College on Saturday for the 2018 Utah Cheer Club Sport State Cheer Competition. Bear River and Ridgeline high schools placed in several different categories at the competition.

In the 4A Sideline/Timeout Dance category, Ridgeline finished 2nd followed by Bear River at 3rd. Additionally, Bear River finished 2nd in the 4A Sideline/Timeout Cheer category and 3rd in the 4A Songleading/Pom category.

In order to compete at state, teams had to qualify at either the Southern or Northern Competition. Cheerleading does not fall under the Utah High School Activities Association and is treated more as a club sport. Saturday’s competition was produced by RC Competes and directed by Lori Rupp and Kellie Chamberlain.

According to Rupp, “Many cheer teams in Utah have a competitive component to their programs and these schools compete in and out of State at Regional and National Competitions.

“These competitions are sponsored by National Companies and are held all over the country and Utah Cheer Teams do very well against other states.”

Current and former cheer teams from the University of Utah, Weber State, Southern Utah University, Salt Lake Community College and Utah Valley University assisted in the competition. There were also four judges from out of state.
