COWBOY POETRY: Goodbye Football

Cowboy poet Bryce Angell

Today I shut our TV off. For me, no NFL. Has football left our home for good? I’d say that’s hard to tell.

I haven’t seen much of the world. I’m just a country boy. But I know what we’ve been given, this free land to enjoy.

I’ve listened to my father talk of times in World War II. He said, “Those young men gave their lives. Americans true blue!”

“And when the conflict ended and for those who didn’t die. Old Glory stood for freedom. Not a veteran dares deny.”

In 1968, I lost a friend in Vietnam. To disrespect our country’s flag, for him would be a slam.

Protesting is a given right. But let’s not dis’ our flag. The symbol of our country’s freedom isn’t just a rag.

You football boys who take a knee and show your disrespect. I’ve conjured up a way for you to stand with head erect.

Let’s say you forfeit all your cash-donate it to your cause. That’s better than protesting and you’d sure get my applause.

You could tell the NFL this has left you with no choice. Your money for your causes speaks much louder than your voice.

So, let’s see what you’re made of. Bad behavior has a price. I think you’d feel much better if you’d take my sound advice.

But if this plan’s too much for you. Just stand with hand on heart. Your fans will still respect you. There’s no need to be apart.

For now, I’ll sure enjoy a little television break. I’ll spend some time with grandkids; have a life for heaven’s sake.

And to all you football players who want to disrespect our flag. It’s time to change your attitude. Your claim’s not worth the brag.
