Utah State’s Brenn Flint qualifies for NCAA Outdoor Finals in shot put with personal-best mark

AUSTIN, Texas – Utah State sophomore thrower Brenn Flint was absolutely certain she did not have the qualifying mark that would send her to the Pacific Northwest.

Fortunately for Flint, she was wrong. The native of Syracuse, Utah, placed 12th in the first round of the women’s shot put with a personal-best mark of 15.96 meters (52-4.50) on Saturday in the NCAA West Preliminary Championships at Mike A. Myers Stadium.

The top-12 participants punched their tickets to the NCAA Outdoor Finals, which taking place June 7-10 at historic Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore.

“It means more that I didn’t think I was going to make it, so it’s really exciting,” said Flint, who was seeded 22nd in the event. “My throws were all really good today and all of them were over 15 meters. I just trusted my coach (Matt Ingebritsen) and trusted my training, so it went really well today. PR’ing is always fun and it was definitely the best time to do it at the prelims.”

Flint was in 16th place following her first throw of 15.08m (49-9.75), but moved up to 10th after her personal-best throw. She closed her day with a throw of 15.45m (50-8.25).

Junior Olivia Moriconi also competed in the women’s shot put, as she placed 18th with a career-best heave of 15.77m (51-9).

Sophomore Kashley Carter finished 27th in the semifinals of the 5,000m with a time of 17:18.83.

On the men’s side, juniors Dillon Maggard and David Hirschmann placed 16th and 41st, respectively, in the 5,000m (14:36.80) and the discus with a mark of (50.04m/164-2).

The 4×400-meter relay team of graduate transfer Joshua Gordon, freshman Michael Bluth, junior Clay Lambourne and senior AJ Boully placed fourth in their heat with a time of 3:06.75. The Aggies missed out on a trip to the NCAA Finals by a mere 0.25 seconds.

At the conclusion of the three-day West Prelims, Utah State had four student-athletes qualify for the NCAA Outdoor Finals in Flint, redshirt freshman Sindri Gudmundsson (men’s javelin), Boully (400-meter hurdles) and Lambourne (800 meters).
