Public meeting to learn more about Logan River restoration

Right now everyone is looking at the Logan River with concern as spring run-off is making it run fast and high. But there is a group looking at the long-term uses for the river and a public meeting will be held Wednesday evening from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Logan River Golf Course Clubhouse at 550 West 1000 South.

Frank Howe, chairman of the Logan River Task Force, is inviting the public to learn about the river restoration project near Rendezvous Park along Hwy 89-91, planned for August through November this year.

“We started out a couple years ago looking at trying to develop a plan for the restoration of the Logan River. It actually took us a couple years to get a good comprehensive plan put together,” he said.

“And now we’ve got that plan in place and we’re starting to implement some of the things that we’ve brought up in the plan. How to make the river a better place, how to make it (better) ecologically as well as socially.”

Howe was a guest on KVNU’s For the People program on Tuesday and said the values of the river are both to create habitat for wildlife as well as places for people in our community to spend their time. As far as flooding concerns go, part of the project will be to address flood conveyance for this part of the river near Logan River Golf Course.

Additionally, a community planting event will take place on June 17th at Denzil Stewart Nature Park. A bank restoration project was completed at the nature park last fall. The public is invited to learn about bank stabilization and help plant native vegetation.
