Al’s Sporting Goods opening second store

Al’s Sporting Goods, a Logan original that began in 1921, is expanding its operations and plans to open a second store in Utah County. University Place has announced that Al’s Sporting Goods will be moving into 40,000 square feet of prime retail space.

University Place, formerly known as University Mall, is a 120-acre mixed use redevelopment project that includes retail, office space and higher-end apartments in Orem.

“We have always been interested in expanding into Utah County, because being a college town close to lots of different outdoor recreation, it is very similar to Logan,” said Kris Larsen, president and CEO of Al’s Sporting Goods in a press release. “Once we learned more about University Place and its focus on building a new kind of walkable community, we knew we had found our new home.”

Al’s Sporting Goods has been operating in its current location for only a few years. Their current Logan store occupies 60,000 square feet of retail, not including the cycle shop, and opened in the summer of 2014. The new store in Utah County will not be as large as the Logan location.

“As a local, multi-generational, family-run business like Woodbury Corporation, we have a lot in common with Al’s Sporting Goods,” said Randy Woodbury, president of Woodbury Corporation, in a press release. “Al’s has an inherent understanding of Utah’s mountains, climate and terrain, so they know exactly what products Utah sportsmen want and need.”

Al’s Sporting Goods has the longest operating history in the state of Utah among full-line sporting goods retailers and currently offers gear from over 1,200 vendors for a variety of sports, covering all seasons.

The new store is expected to be open this fall and will be located on the northeast side of University Place near the food court, between RC Willey and Costco. It is anticipated that the new store in Orem will bring 70 new jobs to the area.
