Hyrum Museum seeks volunteers for traveling Smithsonian Exhibit

The Hyrum City Museum is seeking volunteers to serve as docents for a traveling exhibit from the Smithsonian Institute that will open on March 25, 2017 and remain in the museum through May 13. The exhibit, entitled The Way We Worked, will feature photographs from the national archives along with interactive displays illustrating the effects of “industrialization, urbanization, immigration, labor unrest, wars, and economic depression” on regular, everyday, working Americans from the years 1857 to 1987.

Although the Smithsonian exhibit’s opening is still a month away, Jami Van Huss, the Hyrum City Museum’s director, is encouraging community members who’d like to volunteer to contact the museum as soon as possible. Volunteers will be asked to commit to two hours of service each week, and the museum would like its promotion of the exhibit to include a schedule of when docents will be available to provide public tours.

The Hyrum City Museum is creating a complementary exhibit to accompany the Smithsonian’s traveling display. Themed Tradition and Innovation: Working Together in Hyrum, the local exhibit will reflect on “traditional lifeways,” as well as the innovative growth of business in Hyrum—especially with regard to the meatpacking industry.

Training for Smithsonian exhibit docents will take place at the museum on March 24, from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

“This is a professional training and will be really great,” said Van Huss. “They already held one for the tour grand opening in Ogden, which I attended, and it’s fantastic!”

The Hyrum City Museum is located at 50 W. Main Street in Hyrum. Community members who would like more information about serving as volunteers/docents are invited to contact the museum at 435-245-0208. Volunteer applications are available online at http://hyrumcitymuseum.org/become-a-volunteer and may be returned via email to <a href=”mailto:[email protected]”>[email protected].
