Trial set for Logan man accused of raping woman at local hotel

LOGAN — The criminal case for George C. Taggart, accused of raping a woman at a local hotel, is likely headed to trial as prosecutors filed a motion to limit evidence attorneys can use in his defense.

Court records show Taggart appeared in 1st District Court Tuesday. The 32-year-old Logan man has been charged with one count of rape, a first-degree felony.

The defendant reportedly asked for the four-day jury trial to proceed, scheduled to begin February 22. Prosecutors also filed a motion that would prevent certain evidence from being presented by defense attorneys during the trial.

Judge Brian Cannell scheduled a hearing for February 15, when lawyers from both sides will argue the motion.

Logan City Police officers arrested Taggart September 11, 2015 after a woman called 911 claiming that she was raped. The victim said she went by a hotel room where the defendant was staying. She claimed she knew him and agreed to meet him there for an unrelated matter.

Once she arrived, Taggart forced himself on her as she tried to stop him repeatedly.

Taggart remains in the Cache County Jail. He could face up to life in prison if found guilty.
