Pop culture is everywhere and we come face-to-face with it through so many more communication channels than ever before. Whether one chooses a few platforms or many, you ‘ll be exposed to many of the same things.
On a recent KVNU For the People program, Jessica Dunyon, a Cache Valley-based marketing and strategic management professionaL, said a recent trend that has caught on is what’s known as ‘The Mannequin Challenge’ that anyone can participate in.
Dunyon explains, “the Mannequin Challenge is basically where you take a video and you hold still while you’re doing the Mannequin Challenge. It’s great for local business right? Because anybody can do this, you don’t have to have any special skill.
“You just have to be able to hold still for 20 to 30 seconds, you’ve got to have people, you’ve got to have a videographer which everybody has on their phone, everybody (has) a video camera on their phone. Even five years ago, making a video was a major production. It’s not a major production anymore,” she said.
According to Dunyon, you use a particular song as the soundtrack, then you upload your challenge to platforms like Snapchat, Instagram or Facebook with the hashtag #mannequinchallenge. It appears to have been started by a group of school kids in Ohio about a month ago.
Dunyon, herself, has been instrumental in developing a mannequin video for a local gym in challenging another gym. She said it’s easy to do and something any local business can do to generate buzz and drive traffic towards their business.
