UPDATE: Smithfield police arrest man suspected of murder

A 25-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder as police are investigating a homicide in Smithfield that occurred Thursday afternoon.

Shane Hallstrom was booked into the Cache County Jail Thursday night on suspicion of murder, a first-degree felony and is being held without bail.

In a press release, the Smithfield City Police Department said officers responded to reports of an altercation in progress, outside a home near 160 South 380 East, just after 5:30 p.m.

When officers arrived on the scene, they found an adult male near the street lying on the ground. He had reportedly been stabbed in the neck with a paring knife. He was bleeding and unresponsive. Paramedics were quickly summoned to provide medical care. They transported him by ambulance to Cache Valley Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

The victim’s identity has not been released pending the notification of family.

The press release stated that officers quickly made contact with Hallstrom, who is considered a person of interest in the case, when they arrived at the home. He was taken safely into custody for questioning and later booked into jail.

Detectives from the Smithfield Police Department, the Cache County Sheriff’s Office and the Logan City Police Department are investigating, processing evidence and conducting interviews.

Chief Travis Allen will conduct a press conference at the Smithfield Police Department, Friday at 10:00 a.m. He is expected to provide further details on the victim’s identity and what led to the incident occurring.
