Democratic gubernatorial candidates square off in debate

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Utah Democratic gubernatorial candidates Vaughn Cook and Michael Weinholtz are expected to face off Monday morning in their first big debate.

The event in Salt Lake City comes less than one week before the party selects a democratic candidate at the state convention.

Both candidates have said they plan to focus their campaigns on health care and improving education. Weinholtz says he will also address improving air quality, while Cook plans to focus on improving personal prosperity.

Weinholtz is a former CEO of a Utah medical staffing company, while Cook is a former Utah County Democratic Party chairman and CEO of a medical technology company.

Utah has not elected a Democratic governor in almost 40 years.

Republicans have a supermajority in the state legislature and hold all statewide offices and congressional offices.
