Seniors helping other seniors through Cache County’s Meals-on-Wheels program

One of the projects that keeps Cache County’s senior citizens the busiest is the Meals-on-Wheels program. On Tuesday, Senior Citizens Director Kristine Johnson told the Cache County Council that program gives the seniors the opportunity to go into the homes of those who need it and deliver a hot meal.

She said while there, the volunteers also check on the resident’s welfare.

“We have two county vehicles that go north and south on the routes,” Johnson said. “All what I call the inner city, is all done by volunteers in their own vehicles.

“We have 80 volunteers that do that. That entails mothers with children, as well as companies that help us, help agencies, and just individuals. In fact, it’s interesting, about 80% of our volunteers that deliver Meals-on-Wheels are senior themselves.”

The county’s senior citizen program involves a great deal of volunteer activities and more of those activities will be featured in future stories.
