Alleged gunman in Cove traffic accident arrested and charged with attempted murder

Cade Austin, 30, arrested and charged with attempted murder and other charges.  Police claim Austin crashed his vehicle and then brandished a handgun and shot at paramedics before being shot himself.

LOGAN — A 30-year-old Preston, Idaho, man has been arrested and charged with attempted murder and other charges. Cade Austin was booked into the Cache County Jail Sunday after allegedly threatening paramedics and passerbies with a gun, during a traffic accident last week north of Cove.

Austin was arrested after being released from Ogden Regional Medical Center where he was being treated for two gunshot wounds.

Charges were filed in 1st District Court Monday. Austin faces two charges of attempted murder, both first-degree felonies and four misdemeanors including driving under the influence, interfering with an arresting officer, reckless driving and having an open container inside a vehicle.

Police report Austin was the driver of a northbound vehicle that ran off US-91, into a bar pit, near mile post 44. He later brandished a handgun and threatened a pair of EMTs who had arrived on the scene to treat him.

One of the paramedics, assistant fire chief Jeremy Hunt, who is also a reserve police officer with the North Park Police Department, also brandished his own handgun to defend himself.

Police said the two exchanged gunfire before retreating to positions of cover. Austin was hit in the chest and left shoulder. He continued to make threats and wave the gun from inside his car.

He was later pulled from his vehicle by SWAT team members after losing consciousness and transported to a hospital by ambulance.

Austin is being held in jail without bail.
