Hyrum woman accused of stealing from employers waives preliminary hearing

Samantha K. Bybee, 30, charged with seven felony counts of theft and forgery, and four additional misdemeanors.  She is accused of stealing more than $50,000 from two of her previous employers.

LOGAN — A 30-year-old Hyrum woman who is accused of stealing almost $60,000 from two of her previous employers, waived her preliminary hearing Wednesday as prosecutors proposed a plea deal.

Samantha K. Bybee appeared in 1st District Court. She is charged with seven felony counts of theft and forgery, and four additional misdemeanors.

Logan City Police Captain Curtis Hooley said most of the charges stem from February 2015, when Bybee allegedly stole $50,000 from the Bearson and Caldwell law office. She had only been employed with the firm a short time before the money went missing. She’s accused of forging her boss’s signature and cashing checks to herself.

After being terminated, Bybee was hired by Eaton Alliance, a company that helps adults with autism and developmental disabilities.

Hooley said shortly after being hired, Bybee took two patients’ credit cards and stole another $900. She was later arrested and remains in the Cache County Jail on a $22,500 bail.

Both employers claim Bybee falsified information on her resume and application.

During Wednesday’s court appearance, Bybee’s attorney Shannon Demler said, prosecutors had made them a plea offer. He asked the court for a week, so he could discuss the offer with his client. Details of the plea were not disclosed.

Bybee was ordered to appear again in court September 15.
