Uncle Sam traveling trophy returns for Celebrate America show

When the annual Celebrate America Show opens September 8 in the Utah State University ballroom it will, for the second year, include an educational component.

Founding director Brenda Anthony says local 4th and 5th grade students have been learning about the 1940’s big band era and they will be competing for what is called the Uncle Sam Traveling Trophy.

Anthony says it is a five-foot high stuffed Uncle Sam.

“He’s just delightful,” Anthony says. “It’s the school with the most attendance and the ones that can make the most noise and have the biggest presence in the ballroom. It’s just a friendly competition.”

On KVNU’s For the People program Wednesday, Anthony said Celebrate America includes three different events: a gourmet dinner at 6 p.m. followed by a Broadway-style show with the theme New York: a Wonderful Town. Following that program there is listening and dancing to Glenn Miller-type music presented by the Larry Smith Orchestra.
