Supreme Court ruling a ‘great day’ for Mormons Building Bridges

A lot of people have reacted in different ways to last week’s Supreme Court ruling which essentially said that same-sex marriages are constitutional and should be legal. On KVNU’s For the People program Friday, Dorrie Burt of Mormons Building Bridges called it a “great day.” She said it was what she had been waiting to hear.

“To parents of LGBT children this is something that they are especially happy about,” Burt said. “Culturally and religiously in LDS homes they have had ‘Families are Forever’ plaques on their walls from the time their children were growing up.

“Then they have a child who comes out and they, the parents, as well as the children wonder, ‘wait, are families forever? Am I included in this?'”

Burt said she realizes, however, that many other people were upset about the Supreme Court decision. She is hoping for more rational discussions between the two sides.
