Utah governor signs 3 veterans-related bills

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Gov. Gary Herbert has signed three bills that recognize and thank veterans and establish more veterans’ courts in Utah.

Lawmakers, Utah National Guard representatives, officials from the Veterans and Military Affairs Department and several hundred veterans attended the bill signings Monday afternoon inside the state Capitol.

Herbert signed a resolution that recognizes and thanks Vietnam veterans and a bill that designates Interstate 84 in Utah as the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Highway.

He also signed a bill to establish veterans’ courts in each of Utah’s eight state district courts.

Some districts courts, city courts and Utah’s federal court system already have the specialty courts, which aim to treat the causes of behavior that may land a veteran in court, such as substance abuse or PTSD.
