Chad Jensen sworn in as new Cache County Sheriff

LOGAN — After an unprecedented victory at the Cache County GOP convention last April, Chad Jensen was sworn in Monday as the new Sheriff. He and other county officers stood in front of a packed courthouse at noon, to take the oath of office.

Many of the people gathered at the courthouse were members of the law enforcement community, showing their support for the new sheriff. Jensen said it was quite emotional.

“During the swearing in ceremony, when I look up there and saw my family, saw my friends and saw certainly the great support I have got from the office there is a sense of calmness that things will be great,” said Jensen. “Just because of the support and mainly the staff we have here, that have been supportive and are looking forward to a change and will support me and the decisions that I want to make. That certainly makes it a lot less worrisome.”

Jensen began his career with the sheriff’s office supervising inmates in the Cache County Jail. He later transferred to the patrol division and then became an investigator and drug task force agent. He was promoted to the rank of sergeant in 1998 and lieutenant in 2004. Before becoming sheriff, he was serving as a lieutenant in the jail division.

Over the last year, since Jensen decided to run for sheriff, he has had time to think about what he wants the sheriff’s office to work on. First he said, he plans to begin rebuilding relationships with the communities and towns the deputies serve.

“Building those partnerships and reconnecting with the community is what will make us successful at the sheriff’s office,” said Jensen. “It is going to make me successful as the sheriff. It is going to make our deputies successful, doing what they do, rebuilding some of those relationships we haven’t had in the past.”

He said he plans to work on deputies’ coverage areas, improving their response time and having deputies attend more council meetings and community events.

Jensen said deputies are also going to begin using body cameras that were previously ordered by outgoing Sheriff Lynn Nelson. The new cameras will replace the previous dash cams, deputies have been using for years.

“What these body cams will do is put all the system into one piece,” said Jensen. “It’s upgrading what we have been doing for years. It’s just the newer, better technology than what we have.”

Jensen received 82.3% of the votes during April’s GOP convention. The victory eliminated Sheriff Lynn Nelson and meant the two would not face off in a primary election.

Jensen said he appreciates Sheriff Nelson and the 35-years of service he has provided to the county.
