Local theatres report big ticket sales for Mormon movie

LOGAN — Megaplex theatres in the valley are reporting above average ticket sales for the opening weekend of “Meet the Mormons,” a feature-length documentary produced by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The movie began showing in the valley Thursday night and theatre managers say several show times are already full.

Stadium 8 theatre manager Stacy Nettles said movie goers have been calling her for weeks, asking about the new movie.

“We have got a number of private showings booked for both stakes and wards,” said Nettles. “I have seen quite a few presales, not a ton but that said, since we put in reserve seating, we don’t get a lot of presales anymore. So the fact that we have any presales at all, indicates to me that the movie is going to do very well this weekend.”

The movie is being shown at both the Stadium 8 in Providence and Movies 5 in Logan.

“Meet the Mormons” shows the lives of six devout members of the Church, living around the world.

In September, Elder Jeffrey R. Holland of the church’s Quorum of the Twelve Apostles said the movie was originally made to be shown at the Legacy Theatre on Salt Lake’s Temple Square. However, the church decided to distribute it nationally after its successful showing to test audiences.

Holland said church members are encouraged to see the movie opening weekend to help boost ticket sales and ensure the movie will stay in theatres. Net proceeds of the movie are being donated to the American Red Cross.

Nettles said this time of year there are a lot of holiday movies being released but she still expects “Meet the Mormons” will be really successful, especially locally.

“So it’s tough to say how long it will hang on,” said Nettles. “That said, my guess to how well it will do; it will be around for quite a while.”

The movie is being shown in over 300 movie theatres around the country.
