Smithfield City Police Chief Johnny McCoy has resigned effective immediately, after being told the city wished to move in a new direction.

McCoy said he was asked to resign during a meeting with Mayor Darrell Simmons, Monday morning.  He said Simmons would not elaborate on any specifics about his performance except to say the city council wanted a change.

McCoy has served as the chief of police since being hired in August 2000, to form the department.  Prior to that, he worked for the Uinta County Sherriff’s Department for 11 years.

McCoy said it hurts to leave the department after 14-years of service.  He felt his job has been very worthwhile and a challenge.
