Oneida Stake Academy Heritage Day

PRESTON – Tomorrow the 24th Celebration in Preston, Idaho will be a fundraiser for the restoration of the Oneida Stake Academy building. The festivities will start at 1 pm with a flag ceremony. All events of the day will occur at Benson Park, behind Oneida Stake Academy.

There will be pioneer activities going on throughout the day. People can take part in watermelon seed spitting contests, three-legged races, egg tosses, and much more. There will also be a pie judging contest. All pies will be auctioned off and the money will go toward putting new windows in the Oneida Stake Academy building. Oneida Stake Academy Board Member Saundra Hubbard said last year they raised over $1,000 dollars just by auctioning off pies.

This is the second year of Oneida Stake Academy Heritage Day. Hubbard said they try to keep all the activities of the day centered around the pioneers and the area’s history. There will be a tractor show, stagecoach rides, and information on quilting, butter making, and harness making to stay true to their theme.

“We thought, ‘What better day to do this than on Pioneer Day?’ The pioneers are the ones that built the Academy,” Hubbard added.

The only part of the day that will cost money will be the dinner. Prices are $12 a person or $45 for a family of five or more. Dinner in the park is from 5 to 7. All proceeds will go to the restoration of Oneida Stake Academy.

The next fundraiser for the Academy will be an original musical, “If These Walls Could Talk”. That will take place on August 8th and 9th. Bring a blanket or lawn chair as well as a donation, and enjoy a night of original music and dance.
