Teenager hospitalized in vehicle accident

LOGAN – A 13-year-old Nibley boy was hospitalized Wednesday after he fell off a car, reportedly being driven by another 13-year-old friend.

Cache County Sheriff’s Lt. Mike Peterson said the two boys along with a third 12-year-old boy were attempting to move a 2004 Jeep Liberty, so they could play basketball. No parents were home so the owner’s 13-year-old son found the keys and attempted to move the vehicle.

Peterson said the 13-year-old drove, the 12-year-old got into the passenger seat and the other 13-year-old hung off the side of the vehicle, holding onto the roof rack. The driver decided to drive around the block. After traveling about a hundred yards from the home, the juvenile hanging off the side, lost his grip and fell off the vehicle, striking his head on the pavement.

The boy sustained a laceration on the head and may have also suffered a concussion. He also had road-rash and bruising.

Peterson said deputies and paramedics were called to the accident at 243 West Hillside Drive in Nibley at 4:00 p.m. They treated the victim at the scene and eventually transported him to Logan Regional Hospital. None of the injuries were life-threatening.

Investigators believe the vehicle was traveling between 10 and 15 miles-per-hour when the boy fell off.

Peterson said an investigation into the accident is continuing. The driver of the vehicle is being referred to Juvenile Court and may be charged with driving without a license, joy-riding and reckless endangerment.
