Godfather of political satire visits KVNU’s For the People

The Godfather of modern political satire, Mark Russell, paid a brief visit to KVNU’s For the People program Wednesday. Russell said he was visiting relatives in Cache Valley and gathering the kind of news he regularly deals with: irreverent political news.

Russell said he was on his way to Arizona after leaving Cache Valley and asked local residents to pray for him.

“They just can’t help themselves in Arizona,” Russell said. “They have to be the center of attention at all times. About a week ago it looked like we were going to pull our troops out of Afghanistan and send them to Arizona to escort gays into restricted restaurants.”

Russell said it started years ago in Arizona when residents said they did not want people coming out of Washington to tell them how to set their clocks. Arizona has refused to go along with daylight saving time.

The veteran satirist said he agrees with those who say irreverence is the bulwark of democracy.

Russell still appears in venues around the country performing his unique brand of political satire paired with music.
