Utah State athletics to perform market and financial feasibility analysis for potential renovations at Romney Stadium

LOGAN, Utah – Utah State University Vice President and Director of Athletics Scott Barnes announced Tuesday that the Athletics Department has hired the consulting firm, Conventions, Sports and Leisure International (CSL), to perform a market and financial feasibility analysis for potential renovations at Romney Stadium. The services of this firm are widely used by universities across the nation.

On Monday, Nov. 4 a survey was emailed out to Utah State alumni, donors and ticket holders within a 150-mile radius of Romney Stadium to obtain feedback from its football fans to help shape decisions about possible renovations. The survey will be able to determine fan interest in premium seating areas such as club sections and suites.

Within this process, CSL will conduct focus group interviews with a diverse group of Aggie fans.

Barnes emphasized that conducting the survey is the first step in determining whether the stadium renovation will take place.

“This process will provide base information and perhaps a bit of a road map,” said Barnes. “Obviously, creating a viable funding model and understanding costs will determine possible next steps.”

Among the priority items on a renovations wish list would be enhancing the overall game-day experience for all fans by improving access and circulation throughout the stadium, updating and increasing the number of restrooms and concessions stands, improving handicap accessibility, and providing other important general aesthetic improvements.

Romney Stadium was originally built in 1968 and has largely gone without any upgrades to the existing structures during its 46-year existence as the seating capacity has been altered twice; once in 1980 with the addition of approximately 10,000 seats to the south bowl, and again in 1997 as roughly 4,000 chair back seats were installed to bring the present capacity to 25,513.

In 2005, the south end zone area of Romney Stadium was renovated, providing improved concessions and restroom facilities as well as a widened concourse on the east side of the stadium. And in 2008, the three-story, 69,000 square foot Jim and Carol Laub Athletics-Academics Complex was completed in the north end zone, providing enhanced athletic and academic needs for all 16 of USU’s varsity sports.
