Utah State’s Nevin Lawson named Mountain West Defensive player of the week

<strong>LOGAN, Utah –</strong> Utah State senior cornerback Nevin Lawson has been named the Mountain West’s Defensive Player of the Week following his performance against Boise State last weekend it was announced by the league office Monday.

It is the first time in his career that Lawson has earned conference player of the week accolades. Lawson also becomes the first Aggie to earn Mountain West Player of the Week honors as Utah State is in its first year in the league.

Along with being named the Mountain West’s Defensive Player of the Week, Lawson was also named an honorable mention Defensive Back of the Week by College Football Performance Awards.

Lawson, a 5-10, 186-pound cornerback from Lauderhill, Fla. (Piper HS) intercepted a career-high two passes against Boise State and returned one 65 yards for his first career touchdown. Lawson also had a career-high five passes defended against the Broncos with three pass breakups and two interceptions to go along with a career-high tying nine tackles, which included one tackle for loss. The pick six by Lawson is the first by an Aggie since Will Davis returned an interception 59 yards for a touchdown against Idaho in 2012. Furthermore, Lawson’s two interceptions are the most in a single game by a USU player since Robert Watts and Antonio Taylor both intercepted two passes at UNLV on Sept. 25, 2004. Overall, Lawson now has three interceptions this year and five in his career.

On the season, Lawson ranks fifth in the Mountain West and tied for 43rd in the nation in interceptions (0.43 pg) and ninth in the MW in passes defended (1.1 pg).

Utah State (3-4, 2-1 MW) continues its 2013 season this weekend playing at Mountain West foe New Mexico (2-4, 0-2 MW) on Saturday, Oct. 19 at 7 p.m. The game will be televised regionally by ROOT Sports (Comcast Ch. 52/693HD, Dish Network Ch. 414, DirecTV Ch. 683) and available to watch live streaming on the internet via the Mountain West Network
