Utah State football hits midway point of fall camp, ready for second scrimmage Wednesday afternoon

LOGAN, Utah – Utah State head football coach Matt Wells ran his team through its 12th practice of fall camp Tuesday morning on Merlin Olsen Field at Romney Stadium in preparation for its second scrimmage, which will be held Wednesday, Aug. 14 at 5 p.m.

Fans are encouraged to enter Romney Stadium via the south gates of the stadium.

“We had a big emphasis on special teams during the first 30 minutes of practice this morning from a personnel standpoint and then worked with officials on game-time situations toward the end of practice.”

During the second week of fall camp, Wells has been impressed with several players who continue to standout.

“During the last four or five days, Travis Van Leeuwen has stepped his game up and been very solid. Joey DeMartino continues to shine and impress the staff. Jeremy Morris, Tay Glover-Wright and Brian Suite continue to stand out to me on the backend, and we continue to get solid play from the linebackers, but that has been the case since day one of training camp.”

As for Wednesday’s scrimmage, Wells is looking for continued improvement with execution and substitution packages on both sides of the ball, along with solidifying backup roles at a variety of positions as his team will run approximately 80 snaps.

Utah State, which is in its second week of fall camp, will practice Wednesday morning from 9:15 to 11:15 a.m. on the practice fields before its scrimmage Wednesday afternoon. On Thursday, USU will practice from 2:40 to 4:40 p.m., also on the practice fields before returning to its normal two-a-day schedule Friday.

Utah State will conclude its second week of fall camp with a situational scrimmage as part of Aggie Football Family Fun Day, sponsored by Macey’s, on Saturday, Aug. 17 beginning at 6 p.m.

All practices during fall camp, which concludes on Saturday, Aug. 24, are open to the public.

Utah State, who is entering its first season in the Mountain West after spending the past eight years in the WAC, will open the 2013 season on Thursday, Aug. 29 at Utah and play its first Mountain West game the following weekend at Air Force on Saturday, Sept. 7. USU’s first home game of the 2013 campaign will be on Saturday, Sept. 14 against Weber State, while its first home Mountain West game will be on Saturday, Oct. 12 against Boise State.
