Utah State Football starts fall camp Friday, Aug. 2

LOGAN, Utah – Utah State’s football team will officially begin fall camp on Friday, Aug. 2 with its first practice from 2:15 to 4:15 p.m., on the USU practice field located between the football stadium and the indoor practice facility. All practices during fall camp, which concludes on Saturday, Aug. 24, are open to the public.

First-year head coach Matt Wells welcomes back 49 lettermen (offense-23, defense-22, specialists-4) and 18 starters (offense-8, defense-7, specialists-3) from its most successful team in school history as USU ended the 2012 season with a school-best 11-2 record as it set school records for wins (11) and home wins (6), while recording just its second bowl win in school history with a 41-15 victory against Toledo in the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl. USU also won its first outright conference championship since 1936, as it went 6-0 in the Western Athletic Conference, and just its third in school history joining the 1921 and 1936 teams that both won Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference titles. USU ended the 2012 season ranked No. 16 in the Associated Press Poll and No. 17 in the final ESPN/USA Today Coaches’ Poll.

“We are very excited to start the season with our new staff and the 2013 edition of the Aggies,” Wells said. “We challenged our players to have a summer that exceeded what they have done in the past and I’m excited to see those results play out on the practice field. There are a lot of expectations from both the outside and internally with this year’s team and we look forward to those challenges. I expect a high-energy and fast-paced practice Friday.”

Practices on Friday and Saturday, Aug. 2-3, will have players in helmets, practice jerseys and shorts as part of the five-day acclimation period before adding shoulder pads for practices next Monday and Tuesday, Aug. 5-6.
