Lower canal contaminated with oil

Around 7 p.m. Saturday night dispatch was contacted about oil in the Lower Canal in North Logan/Hyde Park area. Teams responded to find and isolate the source of the oil. It has since been confirmed that the contaminated water has traveled five miles.

It was determined that oil from a chip and seal project on 1800 North in North Logan was washed into the canal following Saturday’s rain storm. Units are in process of containing the spill.

The contaminated water has been diverted to a field near U.S. 91 and upstream water has been slowed to allow for the spill to be contained and clean up to begin.

An environmental clean up company has been contacted to help facilitate the clean up and is en route. The Bear River Health Department will oversee the clean up process.

If the water is brown or residents are noticing an unusual odor in the North Logan/Hyde Park irrigation system, they should not water.
