Ward on county surveyor job elimination

The Cache County Council voted to eliminate the county surveyor’s office when the current surveyor, Preston Ward, retires at the end of September. The vote was six to one with Council Member Kathy Robison voting against the move.

Preston Ward told council members he feels it is a poor decision, narrowly-focused, without looking at the whole picture.

“On Friday, I signed and reviewed two subdivision plats,” explained Ward. “One for Wellsville City and also Smithfield City, and I just did one for River Heights City. Also, state law requires the county surveyor to approve annexation plats. So each one of those, when you look at it if you’re contracting, I would guess a private contractor would charge $500.”

Others speaking out against the move said state officials are recommending that each county have a surveyor. Cache County Executive Lynn Lemon says he feels closing the office and contracting for services will save a considerable amount of money.
