Smithfield downs Providence, pulls within two games

It was a night of payback for the Smithfield Blue Sox in a 9-4 win over league-leader Providence on Tuesday.

Having dropped their past two games to the Wolverines by a combined 16 runs, the Blue Sox jumped out to a 3-1 lead in the first inning and never looked back.

Smithfield added to its lead in the second to open a 5-1 advantage before Providence stormed back to within one in the fourth, but the Blue Sox bats piled on 11 hits to stretch the lead back to a comfortable margin.

Mitch Berryhill led the way for the Blue Sox with three RBI’s as Smithfield pulled to within two games of Providence in the league standings at 7-5. Providence dropped to 8-2.

Providence host Brigham City on Thursday at 7:30 p.m., while Smithfield hosts a double header on Saturday at home at 6 p.m.
