Mustangs down Maple Mountain in 4A state softball tournament

HYRUM – Senior pitcher Jordan Smith went the distance with a 1-hit wonder to lead the Mountain Crest softball team past Maple Mountain on Tuesday in the first round of the 4A girl’s state softball tournament.

“Jordan pitched a really good game,” Mountain Crest head coach Mike Anderson said. “She’s very determined. You can see it when she notches into things. Today she focused into it. … She really pitched well today and I was proud of her.”

Smith struck out eight in the win, while sophomore Perri Eck went 2-for-3 with a home run to spark the Mustangs.

“Perri is seeing the ball very well right now,” Anderson said. “That’s the thing with those three sophomores we have in the batting order. They put a ton of pressure on the defense. Perri is seeing the ball as well as anybody. She has some of the fastest hands on the team, but she’s doing what she’s supposed to do.”

Mountain Crest will head to Bountiful to face the top-seeded Braves on Thursday at 4 p.m.
