City liaison working to make neighborhood councils more effective

LOGAN— Improving Logan neighborhoods is a top priority for James Olson, and as city liaison to the Neighborhood Council he is going the extra mile by forming a separate, non-funded private organization called “Better Logan” to help make the improvements happen.

On KVNU’s Crosstalk show Thursday, Olson said he is proud of what has been done by the Neighborhood Council in the way of identifying priorities, finding the best way to report complaints, and the best sources of finding to make the needed improvements. Olson said there is some federal money available.

“The government is a strong partner in a lot of these community initiatives,” Olson said. “They’re interested in a lot of them.

“For example, if a block is really interested in getting a sidewalk there are options to work together to create an assessment area, is what they call it, and then go to the city and say, ‘this is what we have, can you cost share with us, or can you pay for it, or whatever the situation?’”

Thursday night the Neighborhood Council met to hear Olson describe the city’s new e-mail subscription system and other communication-related services.
