Experiment ignites small fire at USU lab

Fire crews reporting to a fire in the basement of the Ag Science building at USU.

<strong>LOGAN —</strong> USU police reported to a small fire Tuesday night in the new Ag Science building at Utah State University. The fire was in a lab located in the basement of the building.

The lab was being used to conduct experiments for Dr. Scott Jones, Associate Professor of Environmental Soil Physics. According to police, the lab had an experiment inside that included a heater and a box fan to heat soil that caught on fire.

The lab sustained smoke, water, and extinguisher powder damage. There was no damage reported to the rest of the building. The building was reopened around 10:15 p.m. The State Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating.
