HYRUM— Mountain Crest stayed in control of the top spot in Region 5 with a solid 56-41 victory over Bonneville Wednesday night. Tanner Knowles scored 18 points, and knocked down three 3-pointers for the Mustangs who rebounded nicely after dropping their first region game of the season last Friday.
MC started the game off nicely, opening up a 13-9 advantage by the end of the first quarter. That lead grew to double digits by the half, as Mountain Crest doubled up the Lakers, 14-7, in the second quarter to take a 27-16 advantage into the intermission.
The Mustangs were particularly effective in getting to the line, as they attempted 25 free throws, compared to just six for Bonneville. MC senior Tyler Crosbie joined Knowles in double figures, with 12 points, while seniors Eddy Hall and Faimafili Lualu-Pututau nearly reached that plateau with nine points each.
The second half was much closer overall, as Mountain Crest only outscored Bonneville, 29-25, during the final two quarters of action. However, the Mustangs had already built a large lead and were never seriously threatened by the Lakers.
Mountain Crest (13-5, 7-1) will host valley-rival Sky View this Friday on Senior Night, and that game will tipoff at 7 p.m. The Mustangs will then finish out the regular season at Box Elder on Wednesday, Feb. 20. MC defeated the Bobcats 62-45 in Smithfield earlier this year, and dispatched of the Bees 55-40 at home in their first meeting.
