Some soldiers are getting a holiday from real-estate taxes in Utah.
A new law that takes effect Tuesday exempts U.S. service personnel who spend 200 days of active duty in a calendar year from having to pay the property taxes on their homes.
<div class=”p402_hide”>Another property-tax exemption also is taking effect for military reservists left disabled by a tour of duty. Previously, only active-duty members left disabled could qualify for the tax break in Utah.</div>
Yet another tax break is available for property owners with a green thumb. They can take advantage of a lower “urban farming” tax rate by growing food on their land in Utah’s urban counties.
To qualify, property owners must grow at least half the food that farmers can produce, by the acre. They also must have a “reasonable expectation” of making some money.
