Mountain Crest classes canceled amid possible threat from student

HYRUM– A Mountain Crest student went home and told her parents that she overheard a conversation where a student indicated he was going to come to school today and take his own life and perhaps take other lives as well.

Cache County school superintendent Steve Norton told KVNU radio that he was notified around 10pm Thursday evening. Norton doesn’t know who the student was, but believes the safest thing to do is cancel school today. An investigation is underway, and while they don’t yet have enough information to know who the student was, there was enough concern for the safety of the students that it was decided not to hold school today.

Today marks one week since last week’s deadly shooting in Newtown, Connecticut that claimed the lives of 20 children and six adults. There have been a number of fake threats nationwide since that terrible event.

Today is the last scheduled school day before the Christmas vacation. Norton says Mountain Crest is the only school affected by the closure.

All activities at the school have been cancelled, such as tonight’s choir concert. However, school events scheduled at other schools such as the men’s basketball game at Layton are still scheduled to take place. We will bring you the latest information as it becomes available
