Farm Bureau conference comes at a challenging time for farmers

Farm Bureau members from throughout the state of Utah are in Ogden this week for the 2012 Farm Bureau mid-year conference. Farm Bureau CEO Randy Parker says speakers will include Governor Gary Herbert and Democratic gubernatorial candidate Peter Cooke.

Parker says the conference comes at a time when farmers and ranchers are facing a lot of challenges.

“We’re being challenged by a lot of things in agriculture, probably foremost in people’s minds,” Parker said. “Especially after last year when we had more water than we knew what to do with. This year the tap was turned off very early in the process.

“So we’re experiencing water shortages and high temperatures that’s equated to a drought across the country.”

He says, unfortunately, this could lead to higher food prices and also to some food shortages. He made the comments Tuesday on KVNU’s For the People program.
