Bringing theater alive with creative sets topic of speaker series

The Cache Valley Visitors Bureau kicks off its fifth annual speaker series on Wednesday, June 13 at 7 p.m. in the Historic Cache County Court House. Leading off this year’s series is Dennis Hassan, artistic director of the Old Lyric Repertory Company who will speak on the topic “Setting the Stage–Bringing Theater Alive with Creative Sets.”

Mike Bullock, the visitors bureau series organizer, says Hassan is an associate professor of scenic design at Utah State University and an accomplished scenic designer with more than 80 regional and national productions to his credit.

“It’s sort of an integral part of the production, almost like having another actor on the stage,” says Bullock. “So I’m really excited about his talk about the conception to the realization of set design.

“I think it’s a really good way to kick off our series and also good to get some attention for the new Lyric season coming up.”

The Old Lyric Repertory Season opens its new season the following evening – Thursday, June 14 with the popular production “Steel Magnolias.”

Bullock says there will be five other speakers to round out the series. Maestro Karen Keltner, conductor for Utah Festival Opera and Musical Theatre will speak June 20; Dr.  Bonnie Pitblado, professor of archeology and past director of the USU Anthropology Museum, June 27; Sally Sears and Randy Wirth, owners of Caffe Ibis Coffee Roasting Company, July 11; Cathy Bullock, director of Westminister Bell Choir, July 18; and, Richard Hatch,     magician, on August 1.
