Highway Patrol urging safe driving for holiday weekend

Those with travel plans on busy holiday weekends are accustomed to enhanced measures designed to keep the drive safe.

Utah Highway Patrol Sgt. Rick Mayo talks about UHP’s focus for the Memorial Day Weekend.

“The most important thing we’re trying to do this summer is concentrate on zero fatalities in Cache Valley, which hasn’t happened in many years.

“For Memorial Day weekend we are focused on reducing accidents and helping the increase in traffic to flow safely. To do that we’re going to have extra troopers on the highway and they will be working some specific shifts focusing on DUIs, seatbelt usage and aggressive driving.”

Mayo said extra manpower is already in place because the nationwide “Click It or Ticket” seatbelt enforcement campaign has begun and officers, deputies and troopers throughout the country are working overtime to make sure drivers are wearing their seatbelts.

Other advice for the coming weekend?

“First of all, thank you to the residents of Cache Valley for their responsibility in their driving, and deciding not to drink and drive. That’s very important.

“Also, make sure your tire pressure is adequate. It doesn’t take much to do a quick check on that. Also, make sure you have safety supplies in case you have a breakdown. We’re all working for everyone to have an enjoyable and safe Memorial Day weekend.”
