Soccer’s Flanary Named WAC and Utah State Player of the Week

LOGAN, Utah – Utah State women’s soccer player Shantel Flanary was named the Verizon Western Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week, Monday for the second-straight week. She also earned Utah State America First Credit Union Athlete of the Week. This is the first USU honor of the 2011 season. Fresno State’s Katie DeVault was named WAC Defensive Player of the Week. This is the fifth career WAC Player of the Week honor for Flanary and her second this season. Flanary, a senior forward from Highland, Utah (Lone Peak HS), scored three of Utah State’s four goals last week as the Aggies went 2-0 with a pair of 2-1 road wins against Colorado College and Northern Colorado. In USU’s win over the Tigers, Flanary scored the game-winning goal in the second half. In Sunday’s victory against the Bears, she tallied her fourth game-winning goal of the season, scoring twice in the victory. DeVault, a freshman goalkeeper from Santa Ana, Calif. (Canyon HS), recorded two shutouts on the weekend, picking up a 3-0 win over San Francisco and a 0-0 tie with Loyola Marymount, the No. 21 team in the nation. The freshman made five saves in 190:30 of action over the two games. She is second in the WAC with three shutouts on the season. Flanary has scored in all four of the Aggies’ matches this season. She has five goals and one assist for 11 points to lead both the team and the WAC. Her assist of sophomore Jennifer Flynn’s first collegiate goal ties her with Charity Weston for second in school history in career assists with 12. She is now just three away from tying Lindsey Smart’s record of 15 career assists. This week, Utah State begins its longest homestand of the season. The match on Friday, Sept. 2 against Utah will be the first of four-straight home matches. The battle with the Utes will be Utah Youth Soccer day with the Utah Youth Soccer Association doing clinics prior to the match. After the match, both Utah State and Utah will sign autographs at Chuck and Gloria Bell Soccer Field. This is the first time in school history that Utah State has started a season with a perfect 4-0-0 record. The Aggies’ previous best start was 3-0-0 in 2009. USU is now 3-0-0 against Big Sky Conference teams this season with wins over Northern Colorado, Weber State and Portland State. The Aggies have one more match against a Big Sky Conference team when they take on Idaho State on Sunday, Sept. 11 at 1 p.m. in Logan. Nominees from other sports included: VOLLEYBALL – Junior libero Laurel Bodily (Idaho Falls, Idaho) was named to the Southern Utah hosted Crystal Inn Thunderbird Invitational all-tournament team as she averaged 4.45 digs per set during the weekend as Utah State lost to Pacific (3-0), defeated Drake (3-0) and lost to the host Thunderbirds (3-2). Bodily began the tournament with 15 digs against the Tigers, had 16 digs against the Bulldogs and then recorded a career-high 18 digs against SUU.
