New building planned at Mormon missionary center

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) – Mormon church officials say they have plans for a state-of-the-art classroom and training facility on the campus of the faith’s Missionary Training Center in Provo. Church officials announced Wednesday the new Melvin J. Ballard building will replace an existing facility that houses a bookstore, mail room, training resource center and four large meeting rooms. They say the new building should be completed by the fall of 2013. The new facility will be larger and will include classrooms equipped with new technology resources for church missionaries. Young Latter-day Saints come to the Provo facility for language and religious instruction prior to serving church missions around the world. Church statistics released in April show there are currently more than 52,000 missionaries serving.
