BERKELEY, Calif. – Utah State men and women’s track and field teams captured five event titles as part of 21 top-five finishes on Saturday, the final day of competition at Edwards Stadium for the Cal Brutus Hamilton Invitational in Berkeley, Calif. Senior Armahd Lewis highlighted the day’s events winning the 100m (10.41) and 200m (21.29) races. Lewis now ranks third all-time in USU history in the 100m as both times are his personal-best. Joining Lewis in the top five of the 100m was sophomore Silas Pimentel (10.65) in third and fellow senior Mike Pyrtle (10.68) in fourth. Pimentel also finished in the top five of the 200m taking second with a time of 21.35 while junior Jeff Alley placed fifth, clocking in at 22.11. Other Aggies winning their event included senior Jason Holt who ran a 1:49.67 making it two straight weeks of sub 1:50.00 runs. Freshman Kylie Hirschi also won the 400m hurdles (1:00.04) while sophomore Spencer Hall won his first event of the season, taking the top spot in the discus with a season-best throw of 48.91m (160-05). The men’s 4x100m relay team also took first prize with a time of 40.88, the team consisted of Pimentel, Lewis, Alley and freshman Tanner Hunt, who also finished fourth in the 400m (48.78). “We had a lot of great performances today with athletes stepping up and doing well,” said USU veteran head coach Gregg Gensel. “We have a good sprint group with Lewis, Pimentel and Pyrtle who train really well together and work well together. They feed off each other and I am pleased with how they are doing. For the field events Spencer Hall and Shannon Prince did really well today. We do have a little work to do as is the case in a lot of events, but we are making improvements which has to happen. We want our teams to make progress and that is why we came to this meet. All of our kids were challenged and that is how they get better.” The Utah State women garnered six other top-five accolades including senior Ashlee Cannon ending in second-place in the 100m hurdles with her fastest time of the season (13.83). Cannon was also a member of the 4x100m relay team that finished third with a time of 47.17. She was joined by sophomores Aubrie Haymore, Bailee Whitworth and Mercedes Blackwood.
