UPDATE: 73-year old man dies in I-84 rollover

A 73-year old man from Washington state died in a single vehicle rollover Wednesday morning on I-84 about five miles east of Snowville in Box Elder County. The Utah Highway Patrol says the man may have fallen asleep at the wheel of his SUV. A UHP report states the driver was headed westbound at about 10:50 a.m. when his vehicle drifted off the left side of the road into the median, hitting a delineator post which impaled his vehicle’s gas tank. The vehicle caught fire and rolled back across the freeway at least three times and sprayed the area with gasoline and fire until it came to a rest on its roof near the fence line, approximately 100 feet from the roadway. Lt. Lee Perry says the driver is identified as John Applegate and it was determined he was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash. He was ejected from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene.
