Golfing great Phil Mickelson made the cover of Parade Magazine this weekend. The story paints Mickelson as a mild-mannered, sometimes bumbling professional who has 38 PGA wins, including his third Masters win on April 11, 2010, a victory he and his wife Amy celebrated with one of the longest hugs in golfing history. Some people don’t realize there is a Cache Valley connection for Mickelson. Amy McBridge Mickelson is the daughter of local residents Renee Godderidge, of Smithfield, who married Gary McBride of Hyrum. The McBrides now live in San Diego where Gary works in his son-in-law’s business and the couple has helped immeasurably with the Mickelson’s three children as Amy and Phil’s mother have been treated extensively for breast cancer over the last couple of years. Their major tie to Cache Valley now is Evelyn Ellis of River Heights who has been a favorite aunt, grandma and great grandma to the Mickelsons who keep the phone lines between Cache Valley and California. The relationship has been extremely close since the death of Renee McBrides’s parents, Jack and Hazel Godderidge of Smithfield, several years ago. The Parade story describes Phil and Amy Mickelson as a loving couple and quotes Phil as saying, “She constantly challenges me to be a better person, a better husband a better father and a better golfer.”
